In one of the tightest races in recent memory, Bloomington Doctor David Gill (pictured) appears to have beaten Greene County State's Attorney Matthew Goetten for the Democratic nomination to take on Republican Congressman Tim Johnson this fall in the 13th Congressional District. The final tally is 50.2% to 49.8%.
Macoupin County Clerk Pete Duncan says there is no provision in Illinois that would call for an automatic recount.
The National Democratic Party has its eyes on the 13th Congressional District as one of the seats the party could pick up. The dynamics of the district have changed thanks to the redistricting process and Dr. David Gill says he's depending on independent and moderate voters to send him to Washington, D.C
It wasn't until after 4am Wednesday that the race was called. That was due to delays in Macoupin County caused by ballots that were too big to fit into the machines, resulting in a hand-count. Gill and Johnson will square off on November 6th.
In another race on the Macoupin County Democratic ticket, Brad Targhetta handily beat challenger Ken Snider for County Coroner.
