Lines to return gifts after Christmas can sometimes rival those outside stores on “Black Friday”, but with a little planning, returning gifts can be less stressful. The Better Business Bureau reminds stores are not legally requires to accept items for refund, exchange or credit unless the item was defective or misrepresented. If you are allowed to return an item, there may be other stipulations you should know.
Some stores provide refunds, while others only issue in store credits. A few consider all sales to be final. BBB Investigator Bill Smith tells The Big Z says you may want to consider your timing when making a return.

He says you should not assume that regular return policies also apply to sale or clearance items, save the receipt, and ask about restocking fees.
