An event to help the Hope Rescues Animal Shelter to raise money for homeless pets is coming up in a week and a half. The second annual Polar Plunge to be held in Alton will be held at the boat ramp beneath the Clark Bridge New Year's Day at noon. Inspired by friends plunging into Lake Michigan for the same cause, a pair of Alton natives planned this event last year to raise awareness of their cause.

It proved to be so popular, it was brought back again this year. People who are not interested in jumping in are welcome to watch the plunge, donate money, and cheer on their friends. Co-organizer Sara McGibany of Alton Marketplace says the reaction at city hall last year when they sought permission was interesting.

Hope Rescues is a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter based in Alton, that rescues pets from both abusive homes and shelters that would euthanize these pets if they are not adopted. You can donate to the Polar plunge by following the link
