Illinois Wholesale Furniture is moving to Alton Square Mall. The hope is to open the doors at the former Sears location by October 1. That will fill a 44,000 square foot vacancy that was created when Sears pulled out a little over a year ago. Their agreement with the landlord at Eastgate Plaza expires at the end of this month.
Store owner Ray Cooksey says they see the mall as a step in the right direction for them.
He says they have been busy cleaning and painting this week, and hope to sell a significant amount of merchandise before beginning the "hard move" next week. The departure of Sears created some controversy when the parent company announced a number of closings just months after the Illinois General Assembly approved $150-million in tax incentives.
