Civilian employees at Scott Air Force Base are being furloughed eleven days this summer, meaning each worker will take off one day a week between July and September. That will take an average of $3,000 out of each of the 4,500 impacted by the cuts. That, in turn, will impact the area economy, according to the executive director of the Leadership Council Southwestern Illinois.
Ellen Krohne says the total impact is estimated at a $14-million hit to the St. Louis region's economy over the next three months.
She says ultimately, the missions of Scott Air Force Base and our national security could be jeopardized if furloughs at Scott and other military bases continue to be pursued as a cost-cutting measure.
