A member of the Patriot Guard was killed Monday when a motorist apparently ignored a signal by another volunteer to stop and ran into the rider who was in a funeral procession in south St. Louis. Killed was 64-year-old Mark Schroeder of St. Louis, who was escorting a procession into Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
The female driver of a minivan was apparently asked to stop at the intersection of Telegraph Road and Barracksview Road by another member of the Patriot Guard Riders, but she either ignored or didn't see the man in the street and drove into the roadway, striking Schroeder’s motorcycle. The accident took place around 1:30pm Monday. Schroeder was critically injured and was taken to a local hospital where he died a short time later. The Patriot Guard Riders is a non-profit volunteer motorcycle group that escorts the funeral processions of veterans around the country.
