Keeping the Metro East Auto Theft Task Force and other agencies like it across the state funded is the goal of a piece of legislation sponsored by State Senator Bill Haine (D-Alton).  The agencies are paid for by the insurance companies through a $1 per policy charge.  But that money currently goes into the state’s General Fund, which means it can be frozen and swept by the governor.

Haine tells The Big Z that has happened on more than one occasion, so he went to work on a fix.

In addition to the financial aspect of the bill, it would also allow auto task forces to investigate vehicle-related fraud and give more teeth to laws requiring you to have auto insurance.  The Illinois Senate is currently considering the bill before sending it back to the House.
