If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, feel free to fish for free.  Free fishing days run through Monday.  It’s a time for those who have wanted to try the sport but haven’t a chance, to do so.  “If you know somebody who has not fished and maybe would like to try it or if you have not fished and maybe would like to try it, this would be a great opportunity to do so because you don’t need a fishing license to get out there and enjoy what fishing has to offer,” said Chris McCloud, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Free fishing days are also a chance to get the next generation of anglers hooked.  There is a Family Fishing Fair today at the Jersey County Fairgrounds.  “Fishing is, like hunting, a heritage sport,” McCloud said. “It’s a sport that is largely passed down from generation to generation and in order to recruit that next generation of anglers we need people to take kids out and fish.”  Many local park districts and state and federal parks and wildlife areas are hosting free fishing events to help get new anglers started.  While you don’t need a fishing license to participate, all other fishing rules and regulations apply.
