The University of Illinois is offering free online classes to anyone who'd like to take them. Rob Rutenbar, Head of the Computer Sciences Department, says they're starting off with several courses from the engineering program. Rutenbar says the online courses gives high school students an inside look at what college life will be like.
He hopes the courses draw some of the high-schoolers to the university. Those who take the courses won't receive credit, but they can get a certificate or a transcript. U of I joins Stanford University, Princeton University, and other world class institutions that are already apart of the Coursera online education network. Classes at the U of I should be available sometime this fall.
