A local man and woman are part of a federal indictment alleging unemployment insurance fraud.  41 year old Elizabeth Asbury of Hartford and 41 year old Nicholas Zezoff of Granite City are two of of fourteen people from southwest and southern Illinois who were indicted in U.S. District Court in East St. Louis last week.

The indictments charge each person with, among other things, Embezzling Public Funds, namely unemployment insurance payments administered by the Illinois and Missouri Departments of Employment Security.  The total amount of fraudulent overpayments alleged in the 14 indictments is just over $351-thousand.  These cases were investigated by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Employment Security and the Missouri Division of Employment Security.  U.S. Attorney Stephen Wigginton says those who defraud the unemployment insurance program undermine support of an important public program and hurt and insult every law abiding citizen of Southern Illinois.
