The Alton City Council Committee of the Whole has given preliminary approval to ordinances abating a number of General Obligation bonds, and a resolution that will allow the demolition of a former restaurant on Broadway to proceed. The former CoCo Bongo's Tropical Cafe at 619 East Broadway is located to the west of a pocket park that also borders Jacoby Arts Center.
There was a fire at the building about 5 years ago, and now the south wall is falling down. Another resolution to pursue legal action against a property located at 3 Signal Drive was approved. That is the first step in the legal process that often eventually leads to the demolition of a property. A resolution approving the city's ADA Transition Plan also made it through committee. These issues and more will be discussed at tonight's full city council meeting, which starts at 7:30.
