Madison County Board member Kathy Smith has picked up the endorsement of former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar in her bid for Illinois State Representative of the 111th District. It is a seat Democrat Dan Beiser of Alton has held since being appointed in 2004 when then-representative Steve Davis suddenly stepped down.
Edgar says getting more Republicans elected to the House is vital to wrestling control away from Chicago Democrats.
Smith says she was moved to run after the lame-duck 96th General Assembly pushed a tax-increase plan through in the early morning hours of January 11, 2011, boosting personal income taxes by two-thirds and the state's business income tax by 46-percent. She says "excessive taxation" is tied to the bleak job picture in the state.
