A former employee of the Madison County Treasurer’s Office is suing Treasurer Kurt Prenzler claiming she was fired because of her health. Linda Dunnagan alleges through a federal lawsuit that she was dismissed in 2013 because she suffered from a life-threatening illness.
Dunnagan began working for the treasurer’s office in 2000, and became the office comptroller in 2002. In June of 2012, she was hospitalized with a serious illness, but was able to return to work in August of that year using an intravenous drip hooked to her arm. Dunnagan says she was hospitalized again in November of 2012, but when she returned to work, she says Prenzler suggested she retire and take disability. Dunnagan says she refused and in January 2013, she was notified her position was being eliminated due to budget cuts. An attorney for the county says she was not fired but was offered another position in the office but chose to retire. Prenzler denies the accusations in the suit, and says he will be vindicated in court.
