A former longtime deputy coroner for Madison County has died. Ralph Baahlmann, Jr., who served the county for 31 years, died Monday at Alton Memorial Hospital. He was 61. Baahlmann served under retired coroner Dallas Burke and current coroner Steve Nonn, and retired in 2007.
A statement from the Madison County Cororner’s Office indicated Baahlmann was found in medical distress at his home early Monday morning and was taken to the hospital where he died. Baahlmann was hired as the first paid deputy coroner in Madison County in 1984 and two years later was appointed the first chief deputy coroner in the county. In addition to his role with the county, he served with the St. Louis Major Case Squad for 17 years, was a member of the Alton Civil Defense Board, and was a 25 year member of Twin Rivers Search and Rescue. He was also active with local police unions, state medical examiner and coroner’s associations, and was a longtime member of the Alton Expo Commission. Funeral visitation is Wednesday from 4-8pm at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A funeral Mass is Thursday at 10:30am at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey.
