It may not be the same as having a son or daughter follow you into the family business, but it still feels good. U.S. Rep. John Shimkus (R-Collinsville) now serves alongside a former staffer of his, U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis (R-Taylorville), now in his second term. And Davis is beginning a political family tree of his own. The two newest members of the Illinois General Assembly, State Reps. Avery Bourne (R-Pawnee) and Tim Butler (R-Springfield), used to work for Davis Bourne as a campaign volunteer, Butler as a district director.

Both were appointed in recent weeks to fill vacancies when the elected representatives took jobs in the Rauner administration.
Avery's going to give us a new, fresh voice, says Davis. Tim is probably one of the most well-versed individuals when it comes to governing on the federal level and at the state level that I've come into contact with. I'm still on Cloud Nine that he's a member of the Illinois General Assembly.
I feel like a proud father of someone who is doing very well, says Shimkus of Davis. By any measure, I think, he's proving himself to be the legislator we thought he could be.
