East Alton Village Board member and former fire chief Randy Mortland has died at the age of 58. Mortland had been battling lung cancer and died of the disease on Saturday at his home. He retired as chief in November 2012 and served as a fire fighter for 35 years in the village. Mortland was just elected to the village board in April, the same day he learned of his illness.
Mortland was told he had stage four lung cancer on election day but continued to serve. He held the post of fire chief in the village for more than six years, and his son Drew is currently a fire fighter with the department. Funeral arrangements are pending through Pitchford Funeral Home.
