A former bank manager at Liberty Bank in Bethalto is heading to prison. 40-year-old Matthew S. Liebheit of the 100 block of Magnolia Drive in Moro has been sentenced to 41-months in federal prison for staging a bank robbery and falsifying bank documents.
He will also serve 4 years of supervised release, and ordered to pay more than $140,000 in restitution. Investigators say Liebheit's claim that a masked gunman forced him into the Bethalto Liberty Bank before opening in December of 2014 and taking more than $200,000 from the vault was a lie. The masked person, identified as Eugene Babcock, has pled guilty to his role in the staged robbery and is scheduled to be sentenced March 30, 2016.
