An Illinois senator wants to expand the state’s public records law to include some recipients of state funds. A bill would make state money distributed by non-profit organizations subject to the Freedom of Information Act.

“If state employees and grantees realize that their conduct or misconduct may someday be publicly disclosed, they may hesitate before engaging in this conduct,” said State Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Cicero, pictured). He said a top concern of his constituents is waste, fraud, and abuse by the government. After Sandoval presented his bill to a Senate committee, the chairman, State Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park), told him to negotiate further with both sides and bring it back. S.B. 3773 is in the Senate Executive Committee.
