Madison County health officials say the flu season is off to a mild star, but may be picking up steam if statewide activity is any indication.  No widespread activity has been reported in the Riverbend, but there are about a dozen cases of H1N1 that have been confirmed in the Chicago area.

Debbie Knoll, Director of Nursing at the Madison County Health Department, says it’s not too late to get your flu shot, as most flu outbreaks happen in January and February.

She says you can best protect yourself by having a strong immune system.  To do that, she says to get your flu shot, eat a nutritious diet, get plenty of rest, and wash your hands.
