Much of the flooding-related attention in Alton over the past week or so has focused on Downtown, but the rains that caused the flooding created other problems too. The downpours caused some sinkholes around town and some soil to wash out all the way up to the edge of certain roads, and that will now have to be addressed, according to the city's mayor.
Brant Walker tells The Big Z the most dramatic wash-out problem happened just up the hill from Downtown Alton.

There is also the post-flood inspection of the businesses closest to the river. Walker says allowing the basements of downtown businesses fill with water to equalize pressure on both sides of the foundation is part of the process of fighting the flood, they will now wait to see what if any damage was caused as a result.
