No one was injured in a fire that wasn’t really a fire Thursday morning at the Mel Price Locks & Dam in Alton. The Alton Fire Department received a call at about 8:30am from the facility believing there was a fire in an engine room of a crane that is performing maintenance work from a barge. What actually happened only gave the appearance of a fire.
As it turns out, as Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold tells The Big Z, a coolant hose had blown, spilling a large amount of antifreeze all over the engine room.

Maintenance work is being done at the lock, and the crane is located on a barge that is moored in the auxiliary lock. Sebold says he does not know if there was any internal damage done to the crane.
