The federal investigation into a bid-rigging scheme involving Madison County property tax sales is apparently over, but a class-action suit is not. Madison County Treasurer Kurt Prenzler was one of three County Clerks who were asked to hand over tax records to the federal government during the investigation, but he tells The Big Z it is his understanding that investigation has been wrapped up.
But, he says a class action suit against Madison County, some of the tax buyers, Bathon, and some county officials continue.

Former Madison County Treasurer Fred Bathon pleaded guilty more than two years ago to violating the Sherman Antitrust Act. It was revealed in court that Bathon structured delinquent property tax sales in such a way that eliminated competitive bidding and allowed the tax buyers to engage in price fixing by only bidding the statutory maximum interest rate of 18%.
