U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) is introducing a bill that will create new standards for dealing with concussions in high school sports. The Protecting Student Athletes from Concussions Act would force states to develop concussion safety guidelines in public schools. States would also be required to institute policies that will force students suspected of sustaining a concussion to be pulled from a game, competition, or practice immediately.

States that don’t comply would see reductions in their federal funding. “That gets their attention,” Durbin said. “I’m sorry to have to move in that direction, but that’s what this bill does.” Durbin says the standards are modeled off those already being enforced in Illinois schools.
