The process of possibly building a downtown Alton hotel and conference center has taken what appears to be a big next step. A new feasibility study has been completed, and it recommends the construction of a 110 room SpringHill Suites by Marriott with an adjoining 10,500 square foot conference center. By comparison, the Atrium Hotel - formerly the Alton Holiday Inn - has 135 rooms, but a little less than half of the conference center space.
Alton’s Director of Development and Housing Greg Caffey says this study backs up the findings of a similar study done in 2009.

The build site remains the former Great Central Lumber Company property on Henry Street. Caffey says there will be ample opportunity for public comment on the project as things move forward.
