A Bethalto man is dead following an early morning crash Thursday on Route 140. The Madison County Coroner says 55-year-old Brian J. Mick was driving a 1991 Chevy Cavalier westbound when it apparently hit an abutment at the Wood River Creek Bridge. That is the bridge near the auto salvage yard in East Alton.
The crash was not witnessed, but someone in the area after the crash called 9-1-1 around 5:30am Thursday. Mick was pronounced dead at the scene about an hour later. A preliminary autopsy indicates blunt chest trauma was the cause of death. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Routine toxicology testing will be performed. The incident remains under investigation by the East Alton Police Department.
