Police in South Roxana say a woman made up a story about being sexually assaulted last month, and is now facing charges. 19-year-old Kierstan Cherry of the 200 block of Eaton in Wood River was charged yesterday with disorderly conduct in connection with the case.
In a written statement, South Roxana Police Chief Bob Coles says Cherry came to the police department with her boyfriend and reported the alleged sexual assault on May 20, accusing a South Roxana man with the crime. Sergeant David Davis began an investigation and during the course of interviewing Cherry and others determined the allegations were false. Chief Coles says Cherry admitted to police that the intercourse between her and the man was consensual. Chief Coles stressed the importance of victims of sexual assault to come forward and tell their story, but also said false accusations of the crime are also very serious.
