The body of 36 year old Staff Sgt. Christopher Wilbur has come home to Granite City. Wilbur died August 12 while serving in Afghanistan, and his funeral is Wednesday. The public lined the streets in places and waved American flags as a sign of respect for Sgt. Wilbur and his family.
The Granite City Police Department and the patriot Guard provided an escort that came through town during the 10:00am hour. The route began at Mid-America Airport and ended at Irwin Chapel.
Wilbur is a 1998 graduate of Granite City High School and joined the Army in 2005. He died on earlier this month of non-combat related injuries, but no other details have been released by the Department of Defense. A funeral will begin with visitation on Wednesday from 11am until a service at 2pm at Irwin Chapel in Granite City.
