The Federal Aviation Administration reauthorization bill that has passed the United States House of Representatives appears to be good news for a couple of local projects at St. Louis Regional Airport in Bethalto. Both involve potential safety concerns- one being fire safety, the other, runway lighting.
The Airport Improvement Program portion of the federal reauthorization bill has reduced funding, so the local match on projects goes from 5% to 10%. Airport Manager David Miller says the Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Aeronautics will normally pick up half of the local responsibility. In this case, Miller says they are going forward with pursuing a new fire truck.
New wiring on the primary runway will help with lighting issues. Miller says this project has been on the drawing board for a while, and it looks like it will finally come to pass this year.
