Driving under the influence puts many at risk and is already illegal, but State Rep. Dennis Reboletti (R-Elmhurst) says if you are a hired driver, there should be a harsher punishment. That is why Reboletti is sponsoring a bill that would make drunk driving by a bus, taxi or limousine driver a felony.

“We put a great deal of trust in these drivers and we need that expectation to be there. Just think about everyone who takes a cab because they drank too much. The driver should not have drank more than you did,” Reboletti said. This bill is in response to a situation that happened in Oswego. A limousine driver hired to drive high school drivers to the prom is charged with driving under the influence.
“Every parent that put their kids in that bus thought they were safe. On the way (to the prom) they started getting texts from their kids saying there was a problem,” House Minority Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) said of the incident in his district.
DUI by hired drivers is currently a Class A misdemeanor. Reboletti says he wants to expedite the bill before the end of session.
