Every year, thousands of families struggle to stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer. For many in the low-income category there is the LIHEAP program, but for others who make a little too much for the help, there is a new program offered through Ameren called "Warm Neighbors, Cool Friends."
An initiative of the Energy Assistance Foundation, Warm Neighbors Cool Friends provides home weatherization and energy bill payment assistance to qualified Ameren Illinois customers. Sue Sams, the director at the Foundation and the administer of Warm Neighbor, Cool Friends, says to take advantage of the program, there are a few criteria you must meet. First and foremost, you must be a homeowner and be able to prove it.
Warm Neighbors Cool Friends is designed to help those facing temporary setbacks due to illness, disability, job loss or other hardships. It is designed for everyday working families, or seniors living on fixed incomes. It relies completely on donations, as there is no government funding for this program. If you would like to donate to the program, you can do so through the Energy Assistance Foundation. To learn more about participating as either a donor or recipient, call 1-888-690-5700.
