Alton continues to show trends as a safer place to live year after year, although overall crimes reported in 2011 were up slightly as compared to 2010. Violent crime is down in the city, with murder, sex crimes, robbery and aggravated assaults down 17%.
The property crime rate also dropped 2% during the 1st half of 2012. Arrests for cannabis dropped 26%, and arrests for controlled substances also showed a 26% decrease. Alton Police Chief David Hayes says they are taking a new game plan into the local war on drugs.
