Further curbing elder abuse in Illinois is the aim of the upcoming "Protect Our Community: Stop Elder Abuse" conference to be held a week from Friday at Senior Services Plus in Alton. Circuit Judge Barbara Crowder, Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons and a panel of experts will be there to answer questions about the growing problem of elder abuse.
Margarette Trushell, Executive Director of the Oasis Women's Center, says there are different agencies that take reports of abuse, depending on the elderly person's housing situation.
She says figuring out who to call can be confusing, so she has created a chart to help you navigate the process. More than half of all reported cases of elder abuse in Illinois involve the senior being taken advantage of financially. You can register for the free conference by calling 465-3298, extension 100. The August 17 conference runs from 2-4pm.
