As people scramble to get their tax returns done by the April 17 deadline, there are some free services to help get taxes filed and make sure all credits are taken advantage of. Gov. Pat Quinn is reminding families to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit.

“Too many families do not receive the tax relief they deserve simply because they don’t have the information and means to access it,” Quinn said. “We want our working families to know about the Center for Economic Progress and Illinois’ Earned Income Tax Credit, which will support economic growth and help them keep more of what they earn.” The Center for Economic Progress estimates that 10 to 20 percent of eligible taxpayers did not file for the EITC last year. The Center for Economic Progress offers free tax preparation assistance at tax assistance centers across the state. Families making less than $50,000 annually and individuals with incomes under $25,000 qualify for the free assistance. There are other agencies that offer tax preparation assistance and their locations can be found on the Illinois Department of Revenue’s website.
