EF-4 tornadoes like the one that ripped through northern Illinois last week are pretty rare here.  Only 33 tornadoes of that magnitude have struck Illinois since 1950, according to State Climatologist Jim Angel.

EF-4 tornadoes typically reach wind speeds of 166 to 200 miles per hour, and are usually associated with significant damage, injuries and fatalities.
