U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says if the federal government shuts down, House Republicans will be to blame. The House voted along party lines in passing a bill that would fund the government through mid-December. Without it, the government will shut down when the fiscal year ends on Sept. 30. Republicans attached a provision to the bill that would de-fund the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as “Obamacare”-a move that Durbin said is doomed.

“This notion that you are going to somehow disband ‘Obamacare’ and that’s the only we’re going to keep the government open isn’t going to work,” Durbin said. “This is a political stunt.” The Senate is expected to begin debate on the bill this week, but Durbin believes it has little chance of passing. Even if it did, he said, the President has promised to veto it.
Democratic leaders in the Senate have suggested that they’ll remove anything dealing with the Affordable Care Act from the bill, and then send it back to the House. Republican leaders in the House have not committed to allowing a vote on a bill that doesn’t contain provisions on the health care law.
