U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says he’s proud that his colleague in the Senate came out in support of same-sex marriage.   Durbin calls the decision by Sen. Mark S. Kirk (R-Ill.) to support gay marriage important and historic. “For him to step out, only the second Republican senator to publicly make this statement, was an extraordinary move on his part,” Durbin said.

So will Kirk’s support of same-sex marriage sway other lawmakers? Durbin says it could. “It will give some momentum behind a bi-partisan effort to reach marriage equality in this country,” Durbin said.  There is marriage equality legislation in Springfield that passed in the Senate and is now awaiting a vote in the House.
