It's just about back to school time around the Riverbend, and all area police agencies will be stepping up patrols in school zones. The hope is to keep drivers on their toes in order to avoid potential tragedies. Trooper Mike Link with the Illinois State Police, says while much of the responsibility is on the drivers, the kids need to share the responsibility for staying safe.
Motorists are reminded to watch their speed in school zones and limit their distractions. The speed limit in school zones is 20mph and is in effect from 7am to 4pm. It is illegal to talk on a cell phone in a school zone and it is always illegal to text while driving. Speeding in a school zone is a $150 fine and talking on a cell phone in a school zone or texting while driving is a $120 fine.
