The driver of a tractor-trailer who was killed in a crash on Interstate 270 on Wednesday has been identified. The Madison County Coroner’s Office says 47-year-old Brian Westerfield of Freeburg was behind the wheel when the vehicle ran off the road and burst into flames.
The crash took place in Glen Carbon, when Westerfield’s vehicle crossed the median and hit an embankment near an overpass. Initial findings showed that he suffered from coronary artery disease, but it’s unclear if that lead to the crash or his death. Further investigation and testing will take place by the Illinois State Police. Westerfield was a driver for Jung Transport in Mascoutah. No one else was injured in the crash.
