The Alton School District continues to hold its own when it comes to maintaining a balanced budget. District Director of Finance Chris Norman says the state of Illinois is still behind in its payments, although it's not as dire as it was earlier this year. Norman says at this point, it's the reality that all school districts have to deal with until the state figures out its financial problems.
Norman says the interest free construction bonds made available to the district have provided a nice cost savings while they engage in remodeling projects at the three larger elementary schools. In addition, the district has better purchasing power for its energy needs and overall is saving money in tight economic times:
Work continues this school year on East, and then West Elementary will be refurbished, followed by North Elementary during the 2013-2014 school year.
