The safety of young students in the Bethalto School District has motivated school officials to change the district's alternate transportation policy for next school year. Starting in August, students attending Bethalto East Primary School, Parkside Primary School and Meadowbrook Intermediate School, will only be able to list one alternate location they can be bused to after school dismisses.
The current policy allows students to list two alternate locations. Bethalto East Principal Todd Hannaford says that has created some hectic situations this school year.
Curriculum Director Jill Griffin says this problem isn't limited to one age group.
Hannaford also says that this was a major problem at the beginning of the school year, when younger students were learning which bus they needed to be on to go to their destination. He says this change will make sure that students are safe, even if it means that the they are at the school with a teacher waiting to be picked up until their parents can make it there.
