A bill that would expand property tax exemptions available to disabled veterans awaits Governor Bruce Rauner’s signature. It is the hopes of bill sponsor Dan Beiser (D-Alton) that this bill will help keep more disabled veterans stay in their homes.

Beiser says disabled veterans have served their country, and deserve to be able to lead as much of an ordinary life as possible. Under this law, former service members with 30-49 percent disability qualify for a $2,500 exemption. Those with 50-69 percent service connected disability are eligible for a $5,000 exemption; those with a service-connected disability of 70 percent or greater can receive a full property tax exemption.
