Dial-a-Carol is under way at the University of Illinois. This is a 53-year tradition at Snyder Hall, student volunteers taking phone calls from around the nation and around the world requesting Christmas carols, and usually, the students sing them, says freshman Katherine Moss.

“This year, we’ve been mostly trying to make sure that we sing the songs with whoever’s in the lobby, whoever’s working at the Dial-a-Carol at the moment. But if there’s a song that we don’t know, that we don’t have on our list, or that’s a little too specific for us to be able to sing, we’ll look it up on You Tube and play it digitally for them like that,” she said. Most of the performances are a cappella, though sometimes students bring and use their own instruments. The carols are available at all times through Dec. 18. Last year, they logged 4,000 calls. The most popular song this year is All I Want for Christmas is You, the Mariah Carey number.
