That's how it's worked at the University of Illinois' Snyder Hall since 1960. The “Dial-a-Carol” program is winding down its 56th year Wednesday night at 11:59 p.m.
“This is entirely free,” says UI Housing spokeswoman Kirsten Ruby. “This is the students wanting to give goodwill to the community. They organize themselves, and they get calls from fifty states and from dozens of countries.”

Ruby says some of the callers are alumni – and some are nursery school teachers wanting the students to entertain the class.
The tradition is during the fall semester finals week, 24-7.
