A measure supporters say will maximize the use of staff in dental offices across the state to increase care in underserved areas is now onto the Governor’s desk. House Bill 500 passed both chambers after finding bipartisan support in the House Wednesday.  House sponsor of the measure, Democratic Representative Mike Zalewski, said the measure is meant to increase dental care for populations who need it most.

Illinois State Dental Society Executive Director Greg Johnson said the original concept, which was years in the making, would have been more wide open.

Johnson said the updated version that allows hygienists to perform certain procedures with a dentist in the room and dental assistants to do a procedure to scale the tooth above the gum allows the underserved to get access to dental care.
