A plan to tear down a large neighborhood in East Alton is making progress with the village board passing a resolution this week to approve another portion of the Defense Area Redevelopment Project. The Defense area takes up a large portion of the center of town, bordered by the library and the Middle School on the south along 3rd Street, and the Wilshire Village Shopping Center to the north.
Mayor Fred Bright says this is a plan that is at least a decade in the making. A St. Louis developer is going to be involved in the process.
He says the first swing of the wrecking ball is probably at least a year and a half to two years away. In the meantime, he says the village has gone in on its own to demolish a handful of houses in that area.
