The Dynegy Energy coal-fired power plant shut down June 1, and left a big hole in the budgets of the Village of East Alton and Alton School District, according to East Alton's mayor. East Alton Mayor Joe Silkwood tells The Big Z they would like to see the plant re-purposed, but says it may be a long time before that happens.

Silkwood says the plant accounted for 23% of the village's property taxes, so the board is going to have to figure out how to work around the loss of income. The plant along the Berm Highway closed due to what some union officials say was deregulation of the power industry twenty years ago.
