The Alton School District implemented the Go Math series for all elementary level students as a way to transition toward the new common core state standards. Last night, board members approved a change to the math curriculum language designed to give teachers more flexibility in the classroom according to Assistant Superintendent Kristie Baumgartner.
Baumgartner also says the transition to common core will result in a deepening of the skills developed by students. For example, a student will now learn how to use multiple strategies to solve equations instead of relying on a single algorithm as they have in the past.
In other business, the board also accepted a bid from GRP for plumbing work at North Elementary and appointed Alton High guidance counselor Dorothy Davidson-Rounds as an assistant principal next school year. A decision on which school she will serve at has not been made.
