Illinois farmers have some new numbers to contemplate as they finish off the harvest. The USDA's latest yield forecast for Illinois shows corn down three percent, to 1.96 billion bushels, which is 170 bushels per acre. For soybeans, the latest projection is also a three percent decrease, to 531 million bushels – 54 per acre. The information is interesting, but how do you use it beyond saying it's interesting?

“It's used in all different ways,” says the USDA's Todd Ballard. “The world outlook and supply board, what we have in stocks on hand and going forward, producers can plan what they are going to be doing. It can be used in all kinds of different areas.” Another forecast is out in about a month.
