While a call for blood donors earlier this month resulted in an uptick in donations, a spokesman for the American Red Cross in St. Louis says a critical blood shortage still exists. The agency is again putting out an emergency call for blood donors, as the traditionally low summer blood supply remains at what an agency spokesman says is a level that requires a call for help.
Joe Zydlo, spokesman for the American Red Cross, tells The Big Z they currently have less than a five-day blood supply on hand.

The Red Cross must collect approximately 14,000 blood and platelet donations every day for the patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide. The agency is currently offering a $5 Amazon gift card as a "thank you" to those who donate through the end of August.
