A 24-year-old Carlyle man has been identified as the victim in a fatal crash near the SIUE campus on Illinois 255 Monday night. The Madison County Coroners Office says Max A. Davis was the driver of a truck that was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes just south of New Poag Road when it collided with another vehicle at about 10:20pm. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene a little over an hour later.
After the impact, Davis’ truck caught fire. An investigation at the scene was unable to determine if he had been wearing his seatbelt or if the airbags deployed. An autopsy performed Tuesday indicated Davis suffered blunt traumatic injuries to the head, chest and abdomen. Further testing will be done to determine if smoke inhalation played a role in his death, and routine toxicological testing will also be performed. The driver of the other car was taken to a St. Louis hospital, and their condition is unknown.
